Frequently Asked Questions
Q) How do we get started?
Make sure you or your LO (loved one) aren’t already listed as married in TDCJ. This must be resolved before your request can be approved.
Q) What’s next?
Secure a TDCJ-verified wedding officiant. Each sets their own rate, often based on distance from the unit. Once booked, the officiant will give you what you need to complete an I-60 request for marriage. It goes to the unit law library, and then to the Warden’s office. If approved, the unit chaplain will contact you to schedule.
Q) What about the marriage license?
Request your LO’s ID and an affidavit of absence to be notarized at the unit. Take both to your County Clerk's office to get your marriage license (preferably in the unit’s or your county). The affidavit is only valid for 90 days, so wait to apply until the chaplain has scheduled the ceremony. Ask us about Twogether in Texas discounts!
Q) When are weddings done in the unit?
Monday–Friday, between 8 AM and 5 PM. Units must offer at least two wedding days per month — no weekends allowed.
Q) Where would the wedding be? In the Chapel?
All weddings happen in visitation rooms. A few units may allow outdoor visits in the visitation courtyard, but it’s rare and completely up to the Warden.
Q) Any rules?
Yes — weddings follow standard visitation rules. Only the officiant is allowed inside with you. Time limit: up to 30 minutes, unit/Warden dependent. Dress rules: no see-through, no lace, no hair pins, no stilettos, quarters only.
Q) Rings?
No rings are allowed. Not even symbolic ring exchanges.
